Mining history has left town forever damaged
A century of mining that built Treece, Kansas, has left a legacy of heavy-metal tainted water and soil, surrounded by mountains of toxic mine tailings. Treece residents hope the federal government will buy them out and settle them elsewhere, as it did with neighboring Picher, Okla.

Mitch Hutmacher, you did a fantastic job with this video. I am not a fan of using black and white and dramatic scores with documentary material, but it made your continuity and image matching between the stills and the video very solid. You painted a pretty good picture. You should be proud of what you achieved here - and in only 4:17. Awesome job.

The situation in Treece, Kansas is very sad. I think Mike Htamacher did an excellent job as the Reporter, Videographer and Photographer. He certainly brought awareness to this travesty and he did an excellent job of capturing the desperation and emotions of the residence of Treece, KS. My hope is that ALL of the residents and their pets find healthier living options soon. ones that place them out of harms way.
