Hope for Joyland |
The grounds of Joyland are overgrown with weeds, covered with graffiti and littered with the skeletal remains of the amusement park rides. However, Restore Hope, the organization heading up the Joyland Restoration Project, recently obtained nonprofit status and plans to continue the effort. Restoring the park could cost as much as $10 million. So far the organization, led by 18-year-old Alex East and other young visionaries, has raised about $6,000, earned mostly through T-shirt sales and citizensâ donations. Seeing trees growing between the tracks on the roller coaster makes me realize that Joyland is done and over. People, you get what you want. You dont want to pay, you dont have a amusement park to go to. Its as simple and sad as that. Its one less reason to vacation in Kansas or Wichita.
